Kefir And Berry Smoothie Bowl

by kathrynsherratt

This is a quick and super healthy kefir and berry smoothie bowl breakfast dish…..whipped up in a jiffy and set to tingle your taste buds. You can mix up the fruit as you choose. Here I used frozen berries to keep things simple and they are just as good, if not better, than fresh berries in recipes like this. Banana was my topping of choice to keep my energy levels up but you could add other berries, peaches, grapes…..the list goes on!

This kefir and berry smoothie bowl is a great way to get fermented foods into your diet.

Kefir Health Benefits

Keri is a cultured milk product. It tends to have a tart, refreshing taste and can sometimes be a bit ‘fizzy’ due to the presence of carbon dioxide which is an end product of the fermentation process.

It contains different types of beneficial bacteria to those within yoghurt. Yoghurt contains bacteria that keep the digestive system clean and provide food for friendly bacteria that live there. In contrast, kefir bacteria can colonise the digestive system. The main strains of health-friendly bacteria found in kefir include Lactobacillus Caucasus and Acetobacter species. Kefir also contains beneficial yeasts which help control and eliminate destructive pathogenic yeasts in the body

Berry Health Benefits

There are so many health benefits of berries it’s hard to know where to start!

They are packed full of antioxidants which help keep free radicals under controls. The anthocyanins found in berries protect the body’s cells and help prevent disease. Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries have the highest antioxidant levels.

Berries improve blood sugar levels and insulin levels which is increasingly important as you age. Studies have shown that obese individuals with insulin resistance who drank a blueberry smoothie twice per day for 6 weeks noticed a difference in their insulin sensitivity.

Berries are high in fibre and provide many of the daily intakes of minerals and elements such as copper, manganese and folate. Berries also fight against inflammation and may help lower cholesterol levels.

With all these health benefits, is there a better way to start the day than with this kefir and berry smoothie bowl?! Enjoy!
