This week, it’s strawberry health benefits from Kat’s Kitchen.
Strawberries are the most popular berry in the world! And whilst there are over 600 varieties they all have the same heart shape and red flesh with little yellow seeds.
Like many fruits, strawberries were the preserve of royalty as they were considered a luxury item until the mid 19th century when due to the railroads opening up, strawberries could be transported further and offered to greater numbers of people.
For me, the sight of strawberries heralds the arrival of the summer months and days of sunshine and being outside. And, I’ve spent many a summer picking and eating strawberries on pick-your-own farms and even worked at one for a time!
Strawberries are great on their own, mixed with cinnamon and yoghurt, whipped up in a smoothie or even add to a salad with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
Below are some reasons to include strawberries in your diet:
Strawberry Health Benefits
- Excellent source of fibre to aid digestion and keeps you regular
- Their vibrant red colour is due to an anthocyanidin known as pelargonidin. This helps protect against inflammation, cancer and heart disease
- Excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K which support the manufacture of collagen (C) and blood clotting (K)
