This week the focus is on mid-life health issues and the growing impact of metabolic syndrome.
As we get older, mid-life health risks associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels increase. These traits are all associated with metabolic syndrome which is increasing across the world.
Mid-Life Health Issues and Metabolic Syndrome
I studied metabolic syndrome for my Diploma in Culinary Medicine qualification. Through this, I discovered we can do a lot to reduce our risk of getting metabolic syndrome. And whilst these things aren’t new or special they can be very hard such as diet changes, increasing exercise levels and getting more sleep.

What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is the occurrence of several risk factors which increase an individual’s likelihood of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These factors include high blood sugar levels, elevated blood pressure and high levels of bad cholesterol.
It can be caused by many things, including a genetics. Research has also found there is a strong association between environmental and dietary impacts.
The impact of diet and lifestyle
Most modern-day lifestyle choices contribute to over-eating and a more sedentary lifestyle. This combination leads to more fat molecules being stored which cause insulin resistance. This is the first sign of diabetes.
The good news is that changes to diet and exercise help. These include looking at the type and quantity of food consumed.
