How to sleep better

by kathrynsherratt

This ‘How to sleep better’ blog post tackles the frequent questions posed about sleep. How many hours is enough? 7-8 hours or more? Does how much sleep you need depend on what you’ve done during the day? Should I get up and go to bed at the same time every day?

One thing that most people tend to agree on though is that sleep and good quality sleep is an important factor to our overall wellbeing.

How to sleep better tips

1. Getting up and going to bed at the same time

Having a regular sleep routine can help regulate your body functions. Getting up and going to bed at the same time – even at weekends will allow your body to find its natural rhythm.

2. Eat and drink light immediately before bedtime

We all know how uncomfortable it is to try to sleep with a full belly! Having a 2-3 hours break between eating and going to bed will allow time for your body’s digestive system to work its magic.

If you’re prone to getting up in the middle of the night to visit the bathroom, keeping a check on the amount of liquid just before bedtime is also a good idea.

3. Keep it dark and comfortable

There are all sorts of advice about not using devices before bedtime, not having the bedroom too warm and limiting distractions. It’s also worth keeping the room dark. And it’s also worth appreciating that even if you’re not checking your phone it’s emitting electromagnetic waves that aren’t natural to the body. Anything you can switch off, dim or remove to another room to make the setting as natural and calm as possible is a good idea.
