This week it’s red cabbage health benefits from Kat’s Kitchen as I continue to focus on autumn seasonal vegetables.
Purple cabbage, which is also referred to as red cabbage, belongs to the Brassica family of plants . These include other nutrient-dense vegetables such as kale, Brussel sprouts and broccoli. Red cabbage tastes very similar to green cabbage but its colour means it is richer in compounds that have been linked to health benefits such as stronger bones and a healthier heart.
Red cabbage is very versatile and can be included in your diet raw, cooked, fermented or added to a variety of different dishes. One of my favourite ways to cook red cabbage is slow-roasted in the oven with cooking apples, onions and a sprinkling of cinnamon. A great warming dish as the colder weather arrives. Red cabbage is also low in calories yet nutrient-dense which is great if you’re watching your weight.
