Swede Health Benefits

by kathrynsherratt

This week it’s swede health benefits from Kat’s Kitchen as I continue to focus on autumn seasonal vegetables.

Swede is a root vegetable that belongs to the cruciferous family which also includes broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage and Brussel sprouts. All of the vegetables are known for their anti-cancer properties.

It’s round with a brownish-white colour and looks similar to a turnip. It’s often described as a cross between a turnip and a cabbage, although in fact they are a cross between turnips and kale.

Swedes are very nutritious and are also well known for their antioxidant content.

Here are some reasons to include swede in your diet:

Swede Health Benefits

  • Good source of phosphorus and selenium. Phosphorus is important for energy production and bone health while selenium is essential for reproductive health
  • Contains antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E.  Vitamin C is good for immunity health, iron absorption and collagen synthesis.  Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that also fights cell damage and helps to maintain healthy cell membranes. When Vitamin E is depleted Vitamin C helps regenerate it, allowing the continued protection of your cells
  • Great source of insoluble fibre to support the digestive system. This is linked to other health benefits such as decreased risk of colorectal cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
