Cabbage is often known as the ‘king’ of the cruciferous family of vegetables which also includes broccoli, cauliflower, kale, swedes and Brussell sprouts. All of the vegetables are known for their anti-cancer properties.
The three major types of cabbages are green, red and savoy. Both green and red cabbage has smooth-textured leaves whilst the savoy cabbage is more ruffled. The red and green cabbages tend to be more crunchy whilst the savoy cabbage has a more delicate and mild flavour.
The modern-day cabbage was brought to Europe from Asia around 600 BC and due to its ability to grow in cold climates and as it can be stored easily over the winter it soon spread as an easy to grow and popular vegetable.

- Reducing the risk of cancer due to their phytochemicals. Studies have shown the higher the intake of cabbage the lower the rates of cancer, in particular colon, prostate, lung and breast cancer.
- Effective in the treatment of peptic ulcers, with fresh cabbage juice treating ulcers effectively in less than 7 days.
- Red cabbage is shown to suppress inflammation associated with heart disease
- Supports the digestion system in probiotic fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut with the fibre helping to prevent constipation.
