Raspberries Health Benefits

by kathrynsherratt

This week, it’s raspberries health benefits from Kat’s Kitchen. Raspberries are one of my favourite fruit!

The raspberry is referred to as an ‘aggregate’ fruit as it is made up of seed-containing fruit called ‘drupelets’. These drupelets are arranged around a central, hollow cavity. The most common type of raspberry is red-pink in colour but there are also other colours including black, purple, orange and yellow.

Loganberries and boysenberries are hybrids of raspberries.

Wild raspberries are native to eastern Asia and the Western Hemisphere and have been consumed as food since prehistoric times. Since then, raspberries have been cultivated widely in Europe and North America with many new varieties such as the loganberry developed.

Raspberries are an excellent source of fibre, Vitamin C, flavonoids and ellagic acid.

Below are some reasons to include raspberries in your diet

Raspberries Health Benefits

  • Raspberries are an excellent low-calorie nutrient-dense food. They are great for those with a ‘sweet tooth’ who wish to improve their diet without adding in lots of calories.
  • Flavonoids, which give raspberries their colour, are powerful antioxidants protecting the body from pollutants.
  • Ellagic acid is a cancer-fighting compound as it protects against damage to chromosomes. It also blocks the cancer-causing actions of many pollutants such as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons founds in cigarette smoke and toxic chemicals such as benzopyrene.
