Radish Health Benefits

This week, the focus is on radish health benefits.  Their stand out pungency is caused by a characteristic oil which gives them their unique harp, biting flavour.

I love their crunch and the strong flavour they bring to salads in the summer months. I tend to eat them all year round and often they are great with dips with a little bit of salt to bring out their flavour even more.

Radish Health Benefits

Radishes are thought to have come from Asia and were highly esteemed by the ancient Greeks who carried them on golden platters as sacrifices to the gods. Early radishes were black, long and tapered with the modern day red radish cultivated in the 1700s. The predominant form of radish in Asia, which is known as the daikon, is often pickled and eaten after the rice portion of the meal.

Why include radish in your diet?

Here are a few reasons to encourage you to include radishes regularly in your diet:

  • All varieties of radish are very low in calories and packed full of Vitamin C, which is good for collagen, the main protein substance of the human body and calcium, good for bone health.
  • Radishes contain a variety of sulphur based compounds that increase the flow of bile, through helping to maintain a healthy gallbladder and liver, thus aiding digestion.
  • Like its fellow members of the cruciferous vegetable family (broccoli, cabbage and kale) radish has cancer protective properties.
