Garlic Health Benefits

Bringing a pungent punch this week is garlic – often thought of as a wonder food and personally, I adore it! Native to Central Asia it is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. Through the years it has been used to treat coughs, dandruff, earache, toothache and many other conditions….as well as warding off vampires! Store away from heat and sunlight as this encourages the cloves to sprout which reduces their flavour and uses them up. 

Why include garlic in your diet?

Here are a few reasons to encourage you to include garlic regularly in your diet. 

  • Garlic appears to offer protection from atherosclerosis (the build-up of fats, cholesterol in arteries) and heart disease as it increases good HDL cholesterol levels. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure levels. 
  • The allicin in garlic is thought to fight infection from cold, flu, stomach viruses and also more powerful pathogenic microbes such as tuberculosis. 
  • Garlic is an excellent source of vitamin B6 which is involved in the formation of body proteins and helps maintain hormonal balance and a proper immune function.
